School Zone Safety Group

School Zone Safety Group

The School Zone Safety group was founded after a 5th grader was hit by a car after school while crossing the street on January 11, 2023. Even though it was considered a minor incident and the student was not seriously injured, parents took action by petitioning the school district and the city to improve pedestrian and traffic safety, congestion, and parking.

Parents and staff organized a Town Hall for a Safe School Zone on March 30, 2023. In attendance were LBUSD representatives and City officials. Parents, grandparents, community members, and neighbors took to the podium to speak on behalf of children and their safety.

Parents, families, and staff are welcome to join the School Zone Safety group. SZS organizes Walk to School Week, a week-long campaign to encourage families to walk, bike, or scooter to school. Families who live more than a mile away can “park and walk” to school.

SZS meetings TBD.
